The purpose of the study is to investigate the effect of adult children¡¯s moving out events on parents¡¯ objective and subjective quality of life using a panel event analysis. Empirical data are employed from the 1st (1998) to the 24th (2021) wave of the Korea Labor and Income Panel Survey (KLIPS). Empirical results suggest that the objective quality of life decreases significantly after setting up a branch family. It shows that parents who share earned income of their children in the household experience a decrease in income due to moving out. Second, the branch family event does not significantly affect the subjective quality of life. Given the development of transportation and communication, this result can be interpreted as it becomes easy to maintain the support relationship between parents and their children even if they live apart. This study is meaningful since it examines the dynamics of quality of life, focusing on the event of moving out, and considers objective and subjective aspects to discuss the quality of life. Our empirical results present the policy implication that the separation of adult children may lead to poverty in their parent households. Thus policies to cope with this income decrease are needed.
